![]() Locke’s Essay does not contain a method in which both elements are integrated yet this integrated approach carried the day in eighteenth-century encyclopaedias. Secondly, even if his historical method can be regarded as a form of induction, than this would still amounts to only a partial contribution to the eighteenth-century Newtonian paradigm of successful scientific method, which consists of an inductive stage and a deductive mathematical stage. Firstly, Locke’s “Historical, plain Method” does not provide rules for a theory of induction. A similar point can be made about his scientific method: insofar as it is original, it only partially answers the needs of natural science as described in eighteenth-century encyclopaedias. Locke’s pessimism is at odds with the distinctly more optimist epistemological views in most eighteenth-century encyclopaedias. Amongst these special traits, his all-pervasive doubt about the possibilities of certain scientific knowledge of bodies deserves special notice. ![]() In order to establish his particular influence we must be clear about the particular features of his brand of empiricism. Eighteenth-century science was empiricist, corpuscular and mechanicist, but Locke was not the only philosopher to have defended these views. Since most eighteenth century encyclopaedias pay generous attention to the sciences, and since many of these works of reference show a general presence of Locke’s “way of ideas,” encyclopaedias are promising media for an assessment of Locke’s influence on natural science. The presentation concludes with a detailed chart that maps source texts to paragraphs in the article DEFINITION. Even Locke is transmuted by translation into French by Le Clerc before being returned to English by Gildon. Further, the study shows that DEFINITION consists almost entirely of texts translated from French, Latin, and German this recalls Diderot’s complaint that Chambers wantonly appropriated French writers. The text of definition in rhetoric is taken wholly from de Colonia. This study shows that the text of definition in logic aligns closely with the text of the Port-Royal Logique as interpreted by Le Clerc and extended by him to incorporate Locke’s ideas on definition. DEFINITION comprises a long section on definition in logic and a short section on definition in rhetoric. Some of these were expected, but others are surprising. This study identifies sources for each paragraph in DEFINITION with one exception, Chambers’s words are traced to specific lines in the writings of Charles Gildon, Dominique de Colonia, Christian Wolff, Étienne Chauvin, the Dictionnaire de Trévoux, Jean Le Clerc, and, ultimately, the Port-Royal Logique. While this is valuable in its own right, the article DÉFINITION in Diderot’s Encyclopédie is largely Mill’s translation of Chamber’s DEFINITION: thus, Chambers’s sources become Diderot’s sources, and here they discredit Diderot’s attribution of DÉFINITION to Johann Formey. In his Preface, he acknowledged: “What the French Academists, the Jesuits de Trevoux, Daviler, Chomel, Savary, Chauvin, Harris, Wolfius, and many more have done, has been subservient to my Purposes.” However, this is the first detailed study of Chambers’s use of sources to compile a specific article in his Cyclopaedia: we analyze the article DEFINITION in the first edition (1728) of the Cyclopaedia. ![]() These include articles like QUADRILATERAL, EQUILATERAL, and SQUARE.Įphraim Chambers scoured European literatures to compile his Cyclopaedia. These articles may be compared with the mathematical definitions that Chambers used as examples in DEFINITION. Selected terms in mathematics, especially geometry. Terms that are necessarily adjunct with the notion of definition these include the articles ENCYCLOPAEDIA, DICTIONARY, and LEXICON. Articles like ADEQUATE and ANTEPREDICAMENTS, and IDEA explain such terms. Technical terms that are used by Chambers to discuss definition, description, genus, difference, substance, and mode, but which he defines elsewhere in his Cyclopaedia. The articles DESCRIPTION, GENUS, DIFFERENCE, SUBSTANCE, and MODE, which are cross-referenced by Chambers’s DEFINITION in its various editions. This material includes: The sections of Chambers’s “Preface” that discuss terms, definitions, and dictionaries. Further, the sources of each article are described and tied directly to Chambers's text, demonstrating his reliance upon lexicographers Étienne Chauvin, Antoine Furetière, and John Harris. Here the reader will find a selection of a few dozen articles from Chambers’s Cyclopædia that are germane to Chambers’s notion of definition and to my study, Chambers on Definition. A Circle of Knowledge for Definition in Chambers’s Cyclopædia.

The pliers are not as strong as a pair of channel locks or slip joint pliers, but can accomplish most jobs with speed.įor this assignment, I dragged it along on a mountain biking and rafting trip my buddies and I had planned for the long July 4th weekend. From there, you’re ready to pry and pull your way to victory. As you drive this motion upward and engage the buttons on the slide, your blunt-nosed pliers rapidly move into the fully erect and locked position with a slick and familiar sound. With a purposeful motion, you pop the leather sheath and two-finger pinch the MP600 out of the holster. Watching someone pull their Gerber out is a work of art when done correctly, and reminds me of a cowboy reaching for his trusty Colt single-action revolver. There is nothing like the smooth transition on the job site or mission when the pliers spring into action. I slapped an MP600 onto my rigger’s belt for two deployments, and since I have become a homeowner have carried one on my toolbelt. I have done some extensive testing to the pliers because I have personally been using the MP600 for around six years, and mainly use the plier function because of the speed with which it can be dispatched. Gerber MP600 (Dan Caywood) How we tested the Gerber MP600 Finally, rounding out the collection is the hobo’s best friend - an old school can opener. By my count that is 11 tools, with triple redundancy at the flat head screwdriver. The mid-sized flat head incorporates a glass bottle opener which is a slick addition. Screwdriving options include a Phillips head and three sizes of flathead. ![]() For cutting, you get a 2” fine edge knife, and a 2 ½” serrated knife. This is done with a T8 wrench, although I have never had to replace mine. Incorporated in the pliers are tungsten carbide pinch cut wire cutters, which are shaped in a triangle so they can rotate as the edges begin to dull. The mainstay is the patented one-hand opening pliers. This is common for many multitool companies to inflate their tool count. Gerber advertises 14 tools with this model, but some are redundant or do not have functionality. The sheath is more than sturdy enough to protect your investment and slips easily onto any belt. The Gerber MP600 I reviewed came with a black leather sheath, adorned with a metal riveted latch and a metal button. Made in Portland, Oregon, the MP600 (which stands for multi-plier 600, naturally) is a no-frills multi-purpose tool that cuts, screws, and crimps its way against any problem you encounter. It’s no surprise that this cold-blooded killer claims to be the number one supplier to the U.S. Like a pistoleer ridding his town of troublesome outlaws, the MP600 purposefully shoots down difficult situations with lightning-fast reactions. The Royal Engineers released chlorine gas an hour before the infantry was scheduled to attack, but the winds shifted, sending clouds of chlorine back toward the British line and forming a toxic fog in no man’s land. In late September 1915, the British tried to give the Germans a dose of their own medicine at the Battle of Loos, with little success. “The British policy was to respond in kind to German gas attacks but never to escalate the war,” says Dorsey. He founded Porton Down, a research facility in the English countryside dedicated to defending Allied troops against gas attacks and stockpiling their own gas weaponry for use against the Germans. Kitchener wasted no time in developing Britain’s own chemical arsenal. If the Germans were going to sink as low as to use gas, then why should the Allies take the high ground? Soon after French made his public statement about the barbarity of German gas attacks, he wrote a private cable to Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War: “We are taking every precaution we can think of but the most effective would be to turn their own weapon against them & stick at nothing.” It wasn’t long before British military officers like the French changed their stance on chemical warfare. ![]() It was not a practical proposition at all.” And could only put the thing back again for very short periods. “I found that in using it in the gas cloud that after a couple of minutes one couldn’t breathe and so it was pushed up over the forehead and we swallowed the gas. A stretcher bearer at Ypres named William Collins described the pads as more suffocating than the gas: Sir John French, commander in chief of the British Expeditionary Force, decried the attack as evidence of German barbarity: “All the scientific resources of Germany have apparently been brought into play to produce a gas of so virulent and poisonous a nature that any human being brought into contact with it is first paralyzed and then meets with a lingering and agonizing death.”īefore British troops received proper gas masks with rubber seals called box respirators, they were equipped with stop-gap solutions, like thick gauze pads that were strapped tightly over the mouth. But did they violate the spirit of the ban? Absolutely.” “Did technically violate the Hague Convention,” which only specifically banned projectiles filled with poison gas? “No. ![]() The British reaction to the German gas attack was “outrage,” says Marion Dorsey, a history professor at the University of New Hampshire and author of A Strange and Formidable Weapon: British Responses to WWI Poison Gas. Many of the deaths occurred when panicked victims rushed to drink water for relief from the burning gas, which only made the chemical reaction worse, flooding their throats and lungs with hydrochloric acid. None of the British soldiers at Ypres had gas masks, resulting in 7,000 injuries and more than 1,100 deaths from chlorine gas asphyxiation. You see if you got to the bottom of the trench you got the full blast of it because it was heavy stuff, it went down.” Well then of course you immediately began to choke, then word came: whatever you do don’t go down. But immediately it got there we knew what to think, I mean we knew what it was. It wasn’t very high about I would say it wasn’t more than 20 feet up. “he next thing we heard was this sizzling-you know, I mean you could hear this damn stuff coming on-and then saw this awful cloud coming over. British officer Martin Greener described the horror of that first large-scale gas attack to the Imperial War Museum. After early failed efforts by the French and German armies to use tear gas and other irritants in battle, the first successful gas attack was launched by the Germans against the British at the Second Battle of Ypres on April 22, 1915.Īs the battle began, the Germans released 170 metric tons of chlorine gas from more than 5,700 cylinders buried in a four-mile line across the front. ![]() Yet from the very start of World War I, both the Allies and Central Powers deployed noxious gasses to incapacitate the enemy or at least strike fear into their hearts. At the dawn of the 20th century, the world’s military powers worried that future wars would be decided by chemistry as much as artillery, so they signed a pact at the Hague Convention of 1899 to ban the use of poison-laden projectiles "the sole object of which is the diffusion of asphyxiating or deleterious gases." ![]() Which brings great convenience to your shooting. While circulating estrogens play a protective role by regulating the immune response to infection, modulation of ERα signalling in SARS-CoV-2-infected lung tissue stimulates proinflammatory signals leading to hypertrophy, vasoconstriction, and vessel obstruction. This work builds on other recent studies 3,4 showing that coagulopathy is clearly associated with the interaction of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) protein with the human Erα. This interaction is mediated by a nuclear receptor co-regulator (NRC) LXD-like motif present on the viral protein S2 subunit, and the activation function 2 (AF-2) region on ERα 2. The tendency for the Spike protein to stimulate inflammatory and coagulation has been implicated in coagulopathy observed in the lungs, heart and kidneys of COVID-19 patients with a similar and extremely rare effects observed in a minority of patients who received COVID-19 vaccines.ĭata stemmed from the EXSCALATE supercomputing calculation predicted a potential function of Spike (S) as a co-factor for human ERα nuclear signalling. MILAN & SAN MATEO, Calif.-( BUSINESS WIRE)-Dompé farmaceutici announced today new peer-reviewed data demonstrating that small changes in the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S)-protein sequence can eliminate its effect in inducing coagulation 1. |
